15 Life Lessons in 25 Years - Retro Sonja Fashion Blog
January 28, 2016

Hi dears!

It’s my birthday today! My 25th to be exact. Yep, today I’m already walking around on this planet for a quarter of a century! And on my birthday, I’m posting probably the most personal post I ever did! I thought it would be fun to do a post on 25 life lessons I learned in 25 years. Not to act as if I have this enourmous knowledge, or to tell you how to live your life, but just because it’s fun! Some of them are quite serious, and things which I really learned over time, and some of them are not so serious. But it’s up to you to decide which ones those are, haha! Also, I will explain some of the ‘life lessons’ more extensively, while others just speak for themselves. I hope you like it! And now I’m really curious; what life lessons did you learn up to know? :-)

25 life lessons in 25 years

1. Always be yourself. Because this way you will be the happiest!

2. You CAN buy love. Since me and my boyfriend have our cat, we’re 100% positive that The Beatles were wrong, and you can actually buy love; you get a pet!

3. Be calm; don’t be rushed all the time.

One time when I was in the grocery store, I suddenly realized how rushed everyone was, including myself. And for no reason really. Of course, there are occassions in which you’re in a hurry. It’s just because we want to be done with doing groceries as soon as possible, that we get all rushed, and sometimes even get annoyed about waiting in line at the cash register. From that moment on, I’ve been trying to relax whenever things take longer than I would like. You can’t change it, so you might as well think about what you want to do tomorrow, or for your birthday, or play around with your phone for a little.

4. Do what you love. Blogging, thinking of outfits, and shooting outfit pictures make me so happy, and that’s worth more than anything else.

5. Making wrong decisions is not a waste of time. You will learn from them.

6. It’s ok to be quiet or introvert.

When I was younger, people always called me shy, because I didn’t really say a lot to people I didn’t know that well. Now that I’m older, I know that I’m not shy, I’m just introvert. It’s not that I was afraid to talk to those people, it’s just that I didn’t really have anything to say. This still happens to me sometimes, and it used to really bother me. Everytime I was in a conversation with someone I didn’t know, at a birthday party for example, and I ran out of things to say, I would drive myself crazy trying to think of things to say. But the thing is, when you don’t know anything to say, it’s better to just say nothing at all. Even when I would come up with something to say after driving myself crazy, after two more minutes, the conversation would be dead again, and the whole process started again. I used to feel awkward about not saying anything in those situations, but the truth is, if you go around thinking of things to say, the conversation ends up to be awkward as well. So you might as well say nothing, or go get a drink. If you’re an introvert person, there’s really nothing wrong with that. Everybody’s different!

7. Every once and a while, let everything go and sing along to all of your favorite songs. It will be a relief.

8. There’s nothing more convincing then learning the hard way. Or else hangovers would be long extinct by now.

9. Treat others like you would like to be treated yourself.

It’s one of my personal values. All of the things that I find annoying, I wouldn’t do to anyone else.

10. Wear whatever you want. It makes you feel free, and happy!

11. Be aware of every good thing in your life.

Often, we get caught up in everything we have to do, and we forget to think about all the good things we have. So, when you get all stressed out, take a moment and remind yourself of all the good things you have in your life.

12. Love is the most important thing in life. When I think about it, the things that really make my life are my boyfriend, family, friends, and my cat.

13. Don’t take anything for granted. Being aware of everything you have, can make you feel really happy.

14. Your gut feeling is almost always right. When I look back, almost everytime I had the feeling something was going wrong, it finally did.

15. Never lift a contact grill with your bare hands, that you have just used. It’s just a bad idea. Ouch.

16. The little things are the most important things. Really, it sounds like a cliche, but I can really enjoy just having a cup of coffee on the couch with my boyfriend.

17. Procrastination is frustration. Or at least, for me. I tend to procrastinate on everything I don’t like doing. But by not doing it, it keeps popping up in my mind, and it drives me crazy. When I think about it, I do know this, but everytime I have to do something I don’t like, I seem to forget about it and I start procrastinating again. Learning point.

18. If you want to make a change, you need to start with yourself. If you feel like certain things should be different, you can wait until the governments creates laws for it, but you can also start working on it yourself. It does make a difference. Even if it’s small. And it feels good!

19. Not having a TV is actually pretty great. Since me and my boyfriend moved in together, almost three years ago, we don’t have TV. We just never bought one, because we both don’t really watch TV. And it’s actually pretty great! We only watch the things you really want to see, and the rest of the time we just relax or talk with each other.

20. Things are not important. Living beings are.

I was once asked what I would take with me in case of a fire. I realized there are actually no things that are important enough to save at such a time. Because, let’s be real; in a fire you won’t have time to save your laptop or phone, for example. Of course, I’m very fond of my phone, like almost everyone these days, and I would be devestated by the idea of all my photos being gone when my laptop goes up in smoke. But in the end, the only ‘things’ I’d save are my boyfriend and my cat.

21. In traffic, only trust yourself. I think my mom thaught me this, and I think it’s a great one. People tend to forget about the traffic rules all the time, so never assume someone’s going to stop for you. Be safe :D

22. Don’t be ashamed of how you were when you were younger. Back then, you had fun doing or wearing what you did, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Plus, it took you where you are now!

23. Don’t be too hard on yourself. You’re doing great!

24. Always be honest to yourself. Because when you don’t, you will only hurt yourself, and maybe also others.

25. Have fun! It’s what life is all about!

So, that was all! I’m not trying to tell you what’s good and what’s wrong, but these are life lessons that I learned that work for me. what do you think of them? And what life lessons did you learn so far? I’m very curious!

Love,

Sonja
