In this outfit post, I’m wearing quite a special accessory. The necklace is not only a necklace, but also a health tracker, a so-called smart jewelry piece! I received this Leaf by Bellabeat health tracker to try out, and I was so curious. You can wear the Leaf not only as a necklace, but also as a bracelet, clipped on your shirt, or clipped on the waistband of your trousers. This way you can always wear it, also when you don’t feel like wearing it as a necklace or bracelet. I tested the Leaf for over two weeks now, and in this post I’m going to tell you all about what it does, what I think of it, and I’m showing you an outfit in which I’m wearing the Leaf as a necklace.
Above you see two other examples of how you can wear the Leaf. Personally, I often wear it on the waistband of my trousers, or on the edge of my pocket.
So, what exactly does the Leaf by Bellabeat health tracker do, and how does it work? By wearing the Leaf close to your body, it’s capable to measure quite some things. You can see these results in the app, which you can synchronize with the Leaf via bluetooth. For example, the Leaf measures your sleeping patterns, by measuring how much you move during your sleep. This way, the Leaf can see how deep your sleep is, and after you wake up, the Leaf will attach a percentage to the quality of your sleep. When you wake up in the morning, you can synchronize this data with your app, and you can see how qualitative your sleep was. Very convenient!
There’s also a meditation function in the app, with all sorts of different guided meditation programs. I usually never do meditation, but now I have the LEAF I’ve been trying it out. And I must say, I do like it. I’m mostly a fan of the ‘deep sleep’ meditation. You can choose whether you want to do this meditation for 2 or 10 minutes. I always choose the 10 minute one, because the 2 minute session is not enough to make me fall asleep. During this session, there’s a soothing voice talking to you to help you focus on a certain image and get really relaxed. Somehow, the voice seems to be talking less and less without you even noticing, such that you get really relaxed and finally fall asleep. I don’t usually fall asleep during the 10 minute session, but afterwards I feel really calm and relaxed, such that I fall asleep much quicker than I used to. So, I’m using this function almost every night now!
The Leaf also measures your activity. You can choose to set it to a minimum steps per day, or a minimum amount of minutes of activity. You can set your own goal, but the app advices a minimum of 10 000 steps each day. Using this feature, I found out I get to an average amount of steps of about 7000 a day. This is very good to know, because now I know I need about 3000 steps a day more to get to those 10 000. Also, I do have the feeling that the Leaf also counts hoola hooping and cycling as steps. I tried updating the app a few times after I cycled or hoola hooped, and every time it added quite a big amount of extra steps. I think this is good, because hoola hooping and cycling are also activity, so I think they should be counted too. I already hoola hooped almost every day, but now that I know that I’m a bit behind on the minimum of 10 000 steps a day, I decided to hoola hoop a bit longer every day.
You can also use the LEAF to check your menstrual cycle, and see your vertile days. Only I don’t use this function, because it doens’t apply to me.
And last, but not least, the Leaf uses all these 4 different functions to measure your stress level. You can choose not to include your menstrual cycle, if you want. The more you meditate, the more you move, and the higher the quality of your sleep, the lower your stress percentage. In the app, you can also see how all these components add to this percentage. For example, you could find out that you should sleep longer or move more, in order to improve your stress level.
All in all, I think it’s a really fun gadget, and I will certainly keep using it! Even more so; I even got a bit addicted to it! I’m wearing it every day, because now I feel like it’s a waste if one day won’t be taken into account for my average, haha! So, if you’re looking for a health tracker which also looks nice, or you’re interested in your sleeping patterns, whether you’re active enough, or you would like to try the meditation programs, I would definitely recommend it!
